Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in Corneal

Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist, Specialist Interest medical and surgical corneal service at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). The post will be based on a full time 10 PA contract. This is an additional post to manage conreal work from the region, including the Birmingham Midland Eye Centre.

Applicants need to be familiar and practiced in the surgical management of modern corneal grafting techniques for emergency conditions and for those patients that require long term visual rehabilitation.

The newly appointed consultant will be expected to provide primary care support and manage patients referred from the neighbouring eye casualty team and walk-in or inpatients.

Ophthalmology is located at four hospital sites as part of UHB which are: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital Birmingham (HHB), Solihull Hospital (SH) and Good Hope Hospital (GHH).

There are more than 30 substantive consultants who provide an outpatient and surgical service. The entire range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics are provided and there is a close communication with consultants in other specialities.

As well as consultant ophthalmologists the eye service is supported by ophthalmic specialist trainees, staff-grades, fellows, orthoptists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and ophthalmic technicians. There is a programme of training for extended roles, with Clinical Nurse Specialists in a number of specialities.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a dynamic and highly skilled Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialist interest in Cornea and External Eye Disease to join our expanding Ophthalmology Department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be instrumental in delivering high-quality specialist care and driving service innovation across the Trust.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide expert diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of corneal and external eye conditions, including keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, infectious keratitis, and ocular surface disease.

Perform complex corneal procedures, including corneal grafts (PK, DALK, DSAEK, DMEK) and ocular surface reconstruction.

Participate in general ophthalmology clinics, theatre lists, and manage emergency eye care patients.

Work closely with the multidisciplinary team, including optometrists, specialist nurses, and orthoptists, to deliver integrated care.

Contribute to the development and leadership of the corneal service, including clinical governance, service evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives.

Take an active role in teaching, training, and supervision of junior doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals.

Engage in audit, continuing professional development (CPD), research, and appraisal activities as per GMC and Trust requirements.
