Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine - QEHB

The closing date is 15 January 2026

Job summary

We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and high-calibre Locum Consultants in Emergency Medicine to join one of the largest and busiest Emergency Departments in the UK.

The ED provides care to a diverse and high-acuity patient population and operates as part of a major tertiary centre, including Major Trauma Centre responsibilities. Effective management of clinical risk, patient flow and operational pressure is a key priority, and the post holder will play a central role in providing visible senior clinical leadership on the shop floor, supporting safe, timely and high-quality patient care.

The successful applicant will work as part of a well-established and supportive team, contributing to Consultant delivered care, supervision of trainees and advanced practitioners, and the ongoing development of Emergency Medicine services. The department is supported by a broad multidisciplinary workforce and comprises resuscitation facilities, rapid assessment and triage areas, majors and minors areas, and is preparing for the introduction of a new UTC from April 2026, incorporating ambulatory care, minor illness and injury pathways, and a GP service.

This post is offered as a fixed term Locum appointment for an initial 12 months. Applicants must hold full GMC registration, be on the GMC Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine or be within 6 months of achieving CCT at the time of interview. The post would suit both newly appointed and established consultants.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the ED and the following:

* To have oversight of all team activity during their clinical session and provide support to other team members as needed.

* Demonstrate excellence in patient care.

* To provide appropriate supervision to doctors in training, locally employed doctors and other clinical practitioners.

* Administrative duties related to patient care.

* Contribution to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education activity, including AHPs as part of the multidisciplinary team.

* Regular participation in departmental meetings.

* Consultants are encouraged and supported with research audit and QI projects.

* Appropriate evening and weekend on-call commitments.

* To examine and treat patients in the ED.

* To support the clinical decision making of all medical and nursing clinicians within the Department.

* To provide on call support out of hours as agreed in the job plan.

* To attend the Department out of hours as per the agreed job plan.

* To remain contactable and available when on call.

* Provide consultant leadership for trauma calls and the management of critically ill/injured patients in QEHB role as Major Trauma Centre.

* Participate in the Trust Major Incident and Mass Casualty arrangements, including attendance during declared incidents and participation in training/simulation exercises.
