Working with NHSE programme to check for liver damage in high-risk communities is being rolled out as part of a major NHS drive to catch more cancers earlier and save lives.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, organised and well-motivated individual to work with the pilot delivery team at the UHB to identify patients at risk of developing liver fibrosis or cirrhosis which may lead significant liver damage and liver cancer.

Primary factors leading to cirrhosis are alcohol addiction, hepatitis and fatty liver disease. These factors have a strong link with deprivation, including homelessness, drug addiction and obesity.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assess eligible patients using a number of testing methods for diagnosis e.g phlebotomy and fibroscanning to assess liver damage. The post holder be responsible for recording and communicating the results and arranging follow up. They will educate patients about reducing risk of developing liver disease, e.g cutting down on alcohol or eating healthily and offer information provided by British Liver Trust.

Patients found to have significant risk of liver fibrosis or cirrhosis will be referred to a hepatology specialist and into liver cancer surveillance programmes. The post holder will be responsible for making these referrals and ensuring patients are tracked as part of a wider programme aiming to detect cancers earlier.

Excellent communication skills are essential as this post requires an empathetic approach and understanding of barriers patients face in accessing and engaging in health screening programmes. The individual will play an active part promoting quality care through clinical practice, research and data collection.

*Community settings including a mobile health bus with scope for attending areas with high levels of deprivation, large health events and public areas
