Locally Employed Doctor – Paediatrics (Tier 1) - Good Hope Hospital

Job summary

We invite applications for a Tier 1 Medical doctor at Good Hope Hospital (GHH), part of University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). The successful applicant will be part of the Tier 1 rota at Good Hope Hospital. This is a fixed term post until 31/03/2026 to cover a rota gap.

The successful applicant will be part of the Tier 1 medical rota covering the paediatric ward, emergency department, obstetrics and the special care baby unit (Level 1) at Good Hope Hospital

Main duties of the job

*To undertake Tier 1 duties on the Tier 1 Medical rota, and function at a senior practitioner level, to provide autonomous clinical care.

*Assume a leading role and responsibility in evidence based clinical practice.

*To be a competent practitioner, leading innovation and demonstrating clinical expertise to a complex case load

*The post holder acts as a resource and advisor, providing expertise to the multidisciplinary team.

*To provide individualized family orientated care utilizing advanced clinical skills

*To support and facilitate the education and training of other members of the children's and neonatal team, including doctors and nurses at all levels.

Job responsibilities

Service Delivery:

1. Medical care provision to babies & children within the Paediatric Unit on GH site.

2. Participate on the medical Tier 1 rota.

3. Attend Delivery suite for high-risk deliveries

4. initiate, lead and supervise resuscitation of compromised infants, children & young people as required in accordance with the Local and National Guidelines.

5. Communicate sensitive and complex information to parents

6. Examine and assess babies, children and young people instigate appropriate management if required (e.g. organizing OPD appointments) and give consent to discharge

7. When requested assess babies, children and young people which require medical intervention. Initiate clinical management, having established a differential diagnosis, and arrange appropriate treatment, or referral.

8. Diagnose and initiate treatment plans and evaluate the response to the treatment.

9. Provide ongoing management and seek senior advice when clinically indicated.

10. Deliver complex high-level interventions autonomously.

11. Act as an expert resource to the multidisciplinary team.

12. Perform, request, monitor and interpret investigations. Take appropriate follow-up action in accordance with local unit guidelines, Seek advice from consultant as necessary within limits of personal expertise.

13. Assess, plan and implement individual medical care plans, in collaboration with other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Evaluate progress, advise care management when appropriate, and document daily progress in the medical notes.

14. Write precise, accurate and timely records, letters, reports and statements in accordance with the Data Protection Act

15. Perform discharge examinations of infants, children and young people and liaise with General Practitioners and other members of the Community Care Team as appropriate.

16. Develop and maintain effective communication with parents and families. Ensure documentation of communication.

  • *Full GMC registration
  • *Eligibility to live and work in the UK
  • *Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
  • *Available to start within 2 weeks of interview

Desirable

  • *APLS, PILS or EPALS AND NLS provider course passed. Previous experience of working with children Part 1 MRCPH or post graduate Paediatric qualification overseas

  • *MBChB or equivalent medical Degree from a recognised University
  • *Able to demonstrate basic clinical knowledge appropriate to level of responsibility
