Job summary
The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in Cardiology will join the Cardiology Directorate at UHB, a high-volume service delivering comprehensive care across acute, elective, and chronic cardiac pathways. The Directorate provides a full range of cardiology services -- from emergency cardiac care, diagnostics, interventional cardiology, and heart failure management, through to outpatient clinics, device follow-up, and long-term cardiac care.
Within this dynamic and multidisciplinary Directorate, the ACP will deliver advanced assessment and management for patients presenting with a wide range of acute and chronic cardiac conditions. The postholder will lead and support advanced clinical decision-making across cardiology pathways, working collaboratively with consultant cardiologists, specialist nurses, physiologists, and the broader clinical team to ensure timely, safe, and effective patient care.
Main duties of the job
A key component of the role will be providing senior clinical presence through the 7 day, ACP-led direct-access cardiology trolley service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, rapidly identifying and reviewing patients with suspected cardiac conditions from the Emergency Department and Acute Medical Units, to expedite diagnosis, begin early treatment plans, and reduce unnecessary admissions.
The ACP will be expected to be flexible to work across all ACP services within Heartlands and Good Hope hospitals as part of a rotation. Working across inpatient, outpatient, and acute assessment areas, contributing to improved flow, reduced waiting times, and enhanced patient experience. The postholder will also support education, service development, and quality improvement initiatives in line with the UHB Advanced Practice framework, promoting evidence-based, patient-centred care throughout the Directorate.
*Applicants will already have started an MSc in Advanced Practice, or be ready to start in September, have experience as a senior HCP, and will already be working in cardiology or a clinically relevant specialty (Acute or Emergency medicine).
*We will consider applications from training ACP's who have completed year 1 of their MSc and are on their way to completing their ACAT assessment to be a qualified ACP. Qualified ACP's also welcome from AHP backgrounds.
