Job summary

The Birmingham Liver and Hepatobiliary Unit is one of the largest specialist Liver Units in Europe. The Liver Unit provides both tertiary and quaternary liver services for much of central England with an encashment of approximately15 million people. A third of the UK's liver transplant waiting list population are served by the QE liver unit. The liver unit is IQUILS level 2 accredited.

The MASLD service is one of the QE liver unit's flagship services undergoing current expansion. There is a large clinical footprint with patients coming from around the UK for review. The clinic is very much a MDT clinic with input from Hepatologists, CNSs, CNS Diabetes, Consultant Diabetologist and Clinical fellows.

The appointee will join the existing team liver medicine consultants working within the largest liver medicine / transplant services in the UK. The unit services a local, regional and supra-regional catchment area of approximately 15 million people.

Main duties of the job

The University Hospital Birmingham Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Hepatologist.The post is for a Hepatologist with an interest in steatotic liver disease Candidates must demonstrate that they can work within a multidisciplinary team.Evidence of an active research interest is essential.

Job responsibilities

The post holders will mainly provide a clinical service to Liver Unit outpatients, with dedicated time for research and the potential for inpatient ward cover. As part of their duties, the post-holder will also:

1.Participate in Liver Unit outpatient activity with a new C&B clinic, MASLD MDT clinic, general hepatology clinic.

2.3 sessions (0.3 FTE) will be dedicated to research. 1 research session will be provided from the Birmingham NIHR BRC, University of Birmingham. 2 further sessions will be provided by the hospitals R&D team to develop the liver clinical trials portfolio

3.Provide specialist MASLD input to MASLD/SLD clinical trials.

4.Participate in MDT meetings (e.g. listing MDT, radiology and complex cases).

5.Be expected to participate in Liver Unit audit and postgraduate teaching programme.

6.Be expected to lead with development of links and interface with primary-secondary care for the management of liver disease (1 session/PA). The candidate will also lead on the unit's A&G/R (1 session/PA).

7.Support the administrative activity of the Liver and Transplant Unit.

8.Contribute to in-patient Hepatology (negotiable)
