Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Physiotherapist (Team Leader) to work within the Specialist Surgery team on a permanent basis at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

UHB specialist surgery service provides highly specialist, cancer and non-cancer work and is the leading regional organ transplantation service.

You will have the opportunity to work with patients across a variety of surgical specialities and perioperative pathways. There will be an opportunity to be involved in the management of a diverse surgical cohort, including ENT and Max-Fax, UGI, colorectal, Hepatobiliary, liver, renal and sarcoma.

This role will offer exciting opportunities for service development, working alongside a highly motivated and engaged MDT with opportunities for publications and attendance at national and international conferences. Applicants must have had prior involvement in audit and service evaluation.

You'll have the opportunity of working with the specialist surgery clinical specialist as well as peer working on the surgical wards.

The physiotherapy department actively supports individuals' continuous personal development.

Main duties of the job

You will lead a team of Physiotherapists & Assistant staff alongside Clinical Specialist & other Team Lead Physiotherapists and will champion the ethos of gold standard care for Specialist surgical patients.

You will be expected to work autonomously, undertaking specialist, advanced assessments & treatment of a diverse surgical cohort, including Upper GI, Colorectal, Liver & Renal surgery, Hepatobiliary, ENT & Max-Facs.

The clinical caseload will largely be based on Surgical wards, with requirement to support the team across critical care at times of planned and unplanned leave.

You'll be expected to use advanced clinical reasoning and analytical skills to interpret clinical & non-clinical information to formulate diagnoses & treatment plans, set goals, and plan onward rehabilitation.

You'll be expected to participate in the development/education of registered, non-registered and undergraduate therapists, and contribute to departmental and speciality education programmes.

There will be an expectation for active participation in service evaluation and quality improvement projects. You'll be expected to be aware of current evidence in perioperative care and its application to clinical practice.

Key skills include confidence in communication, strong leadership, collaborative working, and a personal desire to develop. You must have excellent time management skills, and experience of team management responsibilities such as appraisals/supervision, staff planning and induction.
