Job summary

We are looking for a motivated Cellular Therapy Phlebotomy & Line Care Support Worker to join our Cellular Therapy team within the Centre for Clinical Haematology. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a rapidly developing specialty delivering innovative treatments including CAR-T therapy and autologous stem cell transplant.

The post holder will support patients throughout these highly specialised pathways, providing dedicated phlebotomy, CVAD blood sampling, line care and essential clinical observations. You will also contribute to wider patient support activities, including assisting with discharge discussions, holistic needs assessments, and distributing patient experience and quality-of-life questionnaires.

Working under the direction of the Cellular Therapy registered nurses and reporting to the Lead Cellular Therapy Nurse, you will play an important role in delivering safe, timely and compassionate care. This role offers opportunities to develop advanced skills within a supportive and forward-thinking haematology service.

Main duties of the job

Undertake phlebotomy for cellular therapy patients, including pre- and post-CAR-T treatment bloods.

Run and support the cellular therapy--specific phlebotomy lists.

Obtain blood samples from central venous access devices (CVADs) following training and competency sign-off.

Support CVAD line care under the supervision of registered nurses.

Perform physical observations and clinical measurements to support timely patient assessment.

Assist in monitoring patients throughout the cellular therapy and transplant pathways, escalating concerns appropriately.

Support discharge discussions for autologous stem cell transplant patients (under RN supervision).

Assist with holistic needs assessments.

Distribute and support completion of patient experience surveys and quality-of-life questionnaires.

Maintain accurate electronic documentation and follow Trust policies, procedures and infection-control standards.

Contribute to a safe, organised and patient-centred clinical environment.

Work effectively as part of the Cellular Therapy nursing team, responding to delegated tasks and learning new skills as required.

Essential

  • Successful completion of Trust approved assessment process for Literacy and Numeracy at level 1.
  • NVQ 3 or equivalent knowledge training and experience.
  • Formal phlebotomy training and demonstrated competence in venepuncture.

Desirable

  • Training in central venous access device (CVAD) care and/or CVAD blood sampling.

Experience

  • Evidence of recent working in an acute hospital / relevant healthcare environment.
  • Competent in phlebotomy and recent experience using this skill.
  • Experience in carrying out assigned duties after training experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience in undertaking a range of physical observations and clinical skills relevant to the role.
  • Previous experience working in a healthcare setting.

Desirable

  • Experience working with patients undergoing haematology, oncology or cellular therapy treatments.
  • Previous experience and training in working with central venous access devices (CVADs), including taking blood samples and providing basic line care under supervision, using aseptic technique and infection-prevention principles.
  • Experience supporting discharge discussions under supervision.
