Consultant Upper GI Surgeon with Interest in Benign Upper GI Surgery

The closing date is 26 November 2025

Job summary

We are excited to invite applications for Consultant Upper GI Surgeon with an interest in Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery with a specific interest in complex hiatal surgery. The post will be based on the Heartlands and Solihull Hospital sites.

Our unit is also an extremely busy centre for complex benign upper gastrointestinal surgery. The trust has long been a leader in day-case anti-reflux surgery and are currently looking to expand our provision of advanced hiatal procedures. We are supported by an in-house oesophageal physiology laboratory. The trust performs a large volume of complex hiatal work including anti-reflux surgery, revisional procedures, giant para-oesophageal hernias repairs and surgery for management of achalasia. Cross specialty working within the trust also helps to facilitate surgery for diaphragmatic reconstruction (performed jointly with thoracic surgery colleagues) and support of our nutritional service with feeding tube placements. It is anticipated the post-holder would play an active role in all elements of this service.

Main duties of the job

The trust currently undertakes a monthly benign upper gastrointestinal multidisciplinary meeting which is well attended by colleagues from upper gastrointestinal surgery, gastroenterology and oesophageal physiology services. This meeting helps to facilitate useful discussion regarding complex cases to obtain a multi-specialty perspective and help guide management.

The trust is dedicated to expansion of elective services and our Solihull site hosts a new elective theatre complex including six state of the art operating theatres, one of which is dedicated for benign upper gastrointestinal surgery every day. The trust have also recently expanded our surgical robotics programme to include benign upper gastrointestinal cases on one day per week. In addition, the Heartlands Treatment Centre houses our endoscopy suite and day-case operating theatres one of which is dedicated for performing a large volume of cholecystectomies for the Trust. This is a useful resource for training and allows for additional capacity on other theatre lists for more complex cases. Provision for this list is shared by all Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary surgeons across all Trust sites and the appointee will also contribute towards this service.
