Job description

Job responsibilities

Research work and responsibilities

The paediatric and neonatal unit at BHH is an expanding and busy research unit that aims to deliver world class research and give all children and young people the opportunity to take part in research. This is particularly important as children from deprived and diverse socio-economic background are often under-represented in research.

The postholder will be expected to act as the Principle Investigator (PI) for the NEAT study; this is a novel treatment of ataxia telangiectasia with dexamethasone sodium phosphate loaded into autologous erythrocytes using a novel mechanism. This is an established study that is due to run for a further 12 months and also expand into younger age groups. This is an excellent opportunity for the postholder to be a local Principle Investigator in a commercially-funded, well-established trial. There is also scope for this novel treatment to be expanded into other patient groups, including Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy.

It is likely that there will be further opportunity to develop experience as a local PI for further studies, as well as leading a commercial vaccine study. The postholder will be encouraged to develop their own research questions within the currently enrolling studies, allowing development of their own research portfolio. The department has academic links with the University of Birmingham and Keele Universities and will support the postholder to establish mentorship links within their chosen specialty or area of research interest. There is also scope to develop specific research skills, through courses accessed through Research and Development at UHB or through academic institutions.

Day-to-day research activity will include (but not limited to):

-Supporting for ongoing research studies (through acting as a sub-investigator)

-Seeing research patients

-Attending relevant meetings/networking events

-Supporting grant writing for future studies

-Attending courses/research skill development

-Supporting the setting up of new studies in the department

-Raising the profile of research within the department of paediatrics and neonates

-Support research team activities

-Organise and participate in quarterly departmental research updates and strategy development

Clinical work responsibilities

The post holder will be mainly based at the Birmingham Heartlands (BHH) site but may be expected to work at any of the other hospital sites that deliver paediatric services
