Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an organised and motivated individual to join the BMT Coordinator team in a permanent position. The team are responsible for the coordination of allogenic stem cell transplants, including related, unrelated, haploidentical and umbilical cord transplants. You will work closely with both inpatient and outpatient teams to deliver pre and post-transplant coordination, care and support to patients. You will also work with external partners, including referring NHS Trusts, NHSBT and Anthony Nolan, building strong links across the West Midlands and beyond. Applicants will need to have significant experience within Bone Marrow Transplant and Haematology. Critical skills for this role are strong written and verbal communication, organisation, time management, computer literacy and the ability to work to set deadlines. Due to the nature of the role, patient plans may change at short notice, and the successful applicant will need to be able to adapt to evolving situations. The successful applicant will be well supported by the BMT Coordinator team and BMT Clinical Nurse Specialists, the Apheresis team, the wider Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist team, BMT Consultants, Haematology Matron and Haematology Lead Nurse. You will be supported to undertake further study, and there will be opportunities to attend and present at national and international conferences. You will have the opportunity to present on internal study days and teach other colleagues.
Main duties of the job
*Attending pre-transplant clinics to provide ongoing holistic assessment, patient information, education and advice, both face to face and over the telephone
*Attending MDT and ward rounds
*Facilitating tissue typing of potential related donors and liaising with internal teams to facilitate stem cell collection
*Liaising with external organisations including Anthony Nolan and NHSBT to identify and facilitate stem cell collection of unrelated donors
*Liaising with external colleagues at referring hospitals to ensure clear lines of communication leading up to transplant
*Schedule dates for collection, admission, chemotherapy conditioning administration and stem cell infusion accordingly
*Requesting and collating results from pre-transplant investigations
*Maintain clear documentation and accurate records for the patient admission waiting list
*Writing transplant protocols and preparing protocol packs for admission
*Supporting patients throughout their inpatient admission
*Supporting patients post-transplant face to face in clinics and over the telephone
*Triage patients telephoning unwell post-transplant
*Arranging ongoing treatments and investigations post-transplant
*Supporting patients and families on palliative pathways and receiving bad news
*Delivering education to junior nurses and AHPs on study days and in practice
*Supporting administration of stem cells and cellular therapies on the inpatient ward
*Work in accordance with JACIE and HTA standards at all times
