Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS).

The department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. The Clinical Chemistry department is equipment with Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers and the Abbott a3600 track.

Specialist Chemistry provides a wide range of services to the Trust as well as other Hospital Trusts. Equipment includes IDS iSYS, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysers, with several tests measured including immunosuppressant's and steroids.

As one of the pre-specialists biomedical scientists within the team, you will be trained and supported in the analysis, technical validation, interpretive decisions, and reporting of samples to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care.

The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within any of the sections of the Department across UHB.

The department will consider taking on a Trainee Biomedical Scientist if we are unable to find a suitable HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our busy, friendly team and support our progressive department in providing high quality, timely and specialised services. We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 2022 standards, MHRA approved and IBMS accredited for training.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience of working in a fast-paced department that is continually growing, and to expand and develop your existing knowledge and skills.

You must have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent with HCPC registration or hold an IBMS accredited degree. The Department will consider a Trainee Biomedical Scientist on a learning contract with an accredited BSc in Biomedical Scientist or equivalent, in the view of completing their IBMS registration portfolio in the next 18 months, if we are unable to shortlist a suitable HCPC registered candidate. A trainee will ideally already have experience working in a clinical chemistry department with Abbott analyser experience preferred.

The laboratory operates a 24/7 service, and after appropriate training, you will be expected to support the departmental shift system as required - including weekends. Shifts include Early (7:30-3:30pm), Day (9:00-5:00pm), Late 14:00-22:00pm) and Nights (21:45pm-7:45am).
