Job summary
Following the success of our PPH fellow 2024/5 and our recent shortlisting for an HSJ award, we are again recruiting an anaesthetic fellow to join our Post Partum Haemorrhage team. The post is for a 6 or 12 month fellowship within our large, tertiary referral hospital to assist with the ongoing quality improvement project at Birmingham Women's Hospital aiming to reduce the incidence of post-partum haemorrhage. The successful applicants will be based at Birmingham Women's Hospital. Start date negotiable -- February 2026 preferred but applicants with later start dates will be considered.
Anaesthetic services to Birmingham Women's Hospital are provided by the large Anaesthetic department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB).
The Birmingham Women's Hospital (BWH) adjoins the QEHB site and offers a complete range of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Services. There are several Regional centres on site, including the Regional Cytogenetics and Regional Genetics laboratories. The hospital, in partnership with UHB, is the Maternal Medicine Regional Network Hub and also houses the Regional Neonatal Unit and Fetal Medicine Department.
BWH has over 7500 deliveries a year with extensive Fetal and Maternal Medicine departments including the regional GUCH service in addition to dedicated Renal, Rheumatology, Diabetes, Endocrine, Haematology, Cardiac, Gastrointestinal & Neurology clinics with input from relevant UHB specialists and maternal medicine obstetricians
Main duties of the job
As a department we are working alongside our obstetric and midwifery colleagues to reduce our incidence of postpartum haemorrhage. The main project was launched in May 2024, and we have seen significant reductions in PPH rates and improvements in management.
Initiatives to date include
*Risk assessments -- completed at booking, admission, intrapartum
*Qualitative measurement of blood loss for all deliveries
*PPH dashboard using data from electronic patient record to track PPH rates and allow analysis of data according to patient variables e.g. BMI, ethnic origin, age, depravity index, mode of birth. Also assesses compliance with risk assessments, rates of anaemia and 3rd stage management. This specific initiative has resulted in a shortlisting for an HSJ award in the category data-driven transformation award.
*Introduction of ROTEM
*Introduction of carbetocin
This role allows a fellow to be part of this exciting quality improvement project and learn valuable non clinical skills whilst maintaining and improving their anaesthetic competencies.

The fellow will be required to fulfil a 1 in 8 oncall slot covering both obstetric and gynaecology anaesthesia as one of two resident anaesthetists out of hours. The remainder of the working week will be dedicated to the quality improvement work and a bespoke rota constructed between the trainee and supervisor according to the stage of the project. This role will suit someone with previous experience of implementing change and a minimum of 6 months obstetric anaesthesia experience in a large obstetric unit in the NHS.
Ensuring the wellbeing of all members of the anaesthetic department is a priority. We have a wellbeing group that supports the trainee buddy system and raises awareness of mental health issues and support systems. Although we are a large department we work to foster a sense of community with a wellbeing newsletter and regular events to bring the department together -- with breakfasts, samosa lunches and "Coffee and a Gas".
