Specialist Doctor in Ophthalmology - UHB sites

Job summary

We are looking to appoint an experienced and motivated individual to join our Ophthalmology team. This post is aimed at providing ophthalmology services at the four hospitals attached to the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate is expected to deliver general ophthalmological services including once a week acute clinic with prospective cover with the option for specialist clinics in paediatric ophthalmology depending on applicant knowledge, skills and experience.

The post holder is expected to work with the Consultant sub-specialty leads to mitigate possible risks to the service and to support the service's administrative team in organising, planning, and maintaining a safe and well-led service.

This post will benefit from a well-supported, regular 10 PA job plan. This may include general, paediatric, retinal, cataract and emergency work. The post holder will be a key member of the ophthalmology team and is expected to approach the role with a team-based view on relationships within the department and with other specialties in the organisation. The successful candidate will be encouraged to engage and contribute to clinical audit, governance and quality improvement and innovation in the specialty and trust. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to take up lead roles in various services involving the department. There will be a lot of opportunities to involve in various research in this post.

Main duties of the job

The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC registration and hold a licence to practice

To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post

To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care activities

To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views

The clinics will usually be supported by medical retina fellows, trainees, optometrists and/or nurses and supervision and training of juniors is expected.

To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance

To cover acute clinics taking ward referrals and seeing emergency patients during the working hours
