Note: This is a part time / 18.75 hours per week position. There is currently no option to extend this to full time.

This post presents an exciting opportunity to work in a specialist team focussing on supporting liver services across the Trust and is suited to an individual who has demonstrable experience working in an IT or administrative orientated environment and who has significant experience using, summarising and collating clinical information as well as populating, maintaining and searching databases. Due to the high level of autonomy, broad remit and independent working associated with this post IT or administrative trainees will not be shortlisted.

The post will be based in the Centre for Liver and Gastrointestinal Research (CLGR) based in the Institute for Biomedical Research (IBR) within the University of Birmingham which is co-located on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham site.

The departmental remit is to support research and development in the clinical Liver Unit and is involved in clinical trials and the evaluation of new clinical tests and is dedicated to improving the life of patients with liver disease. By providing infrastructure and expertise in basic science and translational medicine the CLGR can take scientific discoveries in liver disease from the laboratory into novel treatments for patient management.

As a Data Officer the post holder will be directly involved with gathering, collating and inputting a variety of clinical information into databases.

Main duties of the job

This post is responsible for supporting the CLGR databases. This involves the ability to maintain concentration for prolonged periods and maintain attention to detail when assessing complex information to enable accurate data entry to the CLGR InfoFlex databases.

Recording and collating accurate data from a variety of sources querying and summarising information where required under the direction of the CLGR Database Managers. The post is also responsible for preparing data for, and participating in, internal clinical audits and regular audit meetings. The post holder may be asked to deputise for a Database Manager and e.g. attend M&M meetings in their absence.

Good communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a larger group are essential. The post holder must work efficiently and reprioritise workload to meet deadlines. Knowledge and experience using of various Microsoft Office software programmes including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access to produce, reports, presentations and other relevant documents.

The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within any area in the department and will be expected to undertake any training required and to maintain competency including and a specialist level understanding of all the processes they participate in. It is essential that the post holder exercises initiative and judgement using acquired skills and knowledge, always maintaining patient confidentiality.
