Job summary
We are looking to appoint a Fixed Term Research Fellow, within the Department of Hand & Nerve Surgery commencing in February 2026.
The post will be based at the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, part of the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, and the University of Birmingham. This post will be for a period of 12 months.
The appointee must demonstrate that they have a background interest in either orthopaedic or plastic surgery and have successfully completed their foundation training. They would ideally have completed their Core Surgical training be a member of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent and have some previous experience of research.
The Birmingham Hand Unit is one of the busiest hand departments in the UK. It comprises of 11 consultants, six of whom have orthopaedic backgrounds and five plastic surgeons. Over 2,800 patients are treated in the department each year. The unit is a tertiary referral centre for; Brachial plexus injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, and complex wrist conditions.
Main duties of the job
The principal duties will include:
1) Supporting the delivery of ongoing clinical research trials within the department.
2) Developing own research study and generating new pilot data to support new grant applications/fellowships
3) Analysis of data; presenting data at conferences/ meetings; writing publications
4) Liaising with other medical, nursing and therapy staff within the hand surgery team and as appropriate and to contribute to the clinical service and trials currently ongoing within the NIHR SRMRC
5) Gaining experience in the assessment and management of patients within the department of Hand surgery.
6) Participating in weekly hand trauma clinics
7) Participating in hand trauma theatre lists
The post holder will become a co-investigator in relevant clinical trials carried out by NIHR SRMRC researchers. Each of these trials will have procedures that may be delegated to the post-holder according to the study protocol. The post holder will be expected to complete Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training and to comply with MHRA and Trust regulations in regard to clinical research.
