Job summary
This represents a new and exciting opportunity for gastroenterologists in training. We have created a post at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust aimed at gastroenterology trainees at ST3-ST6 level. This post would provide excellent training to enable a future career as a consultant with an interest in IBD. The position would enable the successful candidate to develop skills in management of complex IBD (attending sub-specialty clinics, nutritional issues in IBD, surgical liaison and focused training in IBD specific endoscopy). In addition, the successful candidate would be expected to complete a major research project and participate in the other aspects of our wide-ranging research portfolio leading to publications in peer-reviewed literature and presentations at conferences. The main research focus of this post would be to help lead the establishment of a registry to investigate IV iron use in IBD patients for a 2 year period. We have secured funding from an industry partner to set up the largest registry of IV iron use in IBD. This will allow collection of wide-ranging data on efficacy of IV iron in IBD, effects on QOL and fatigue, biochemical changes and generate multiple research questions for future research.
Main duties of the job
There are a number of other exciting strands to the group's research portfolio including the use of FMT in ulcerative colitis and pouchitis and the role of microbiome dysbiosis in IBD in South Asians and check-point inhibitor induced colitis.
Clinical duties will make up approximately 50% of the job plan with 50% dedicated to research. The successful applicant will be expected to mainly deliver gastroenterology out-patient activity with the possibility of a small in patient gastroenterology commitment. This clinical and research work will be based at the Heartlands hospital site. UHB represents the largest acute Trust in the country and as such has one of the largest and most ethnically diverse IBD cohorts in the UK. There is a well-established IBD multidisciplinary team across all sites. Clinical training will include participation in dedicated IBD clinics, IBD MDT meetings and specialist IBD focused endoscopy. More detail is provided in the accompanying job descriptions.
