Consultant Hand Surgeon

Job summary

UHB are looking to appoint a substantive Consultant Hand Surgeon with specialist interests in complex reconstruction and peripheral nerve surgery (PNS) to join our team of 15 consultants at the Hand & Peripheral Nerve Surgery Department based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), a major tertiary centre for hand surgery. The appointee will contribute to the departments complex reconstruction work, as well as the PNS work that the department is renowned for. Surgeons with a Plastics/T&O background will be considered, expertise in limb reconstruction, including microsurgical tissue transfer & peripheral nerve surgery are essential.

Main duties of the job

A major component of the appointee's elective practice will be supporting PNS, the service receives supra-regional referrals for brachial plexus, lower-limb nerve injury, nerve tumour, TOS, nerve pain & tetraplegia surgery.

The appointee will participate in the hand surgery on-call rota, this includes managing revascularisation & replantation cases from the West Midlands region & will support all aspects of the hand trauma service, one of the busiest in the UK. QEHB is a L1 Trauma Centre & base for The Centre for Defence Medicine, the main receiving site for British military casualties from worldwide conflict areas.
