Job summary

Applications are invited for a Locally Employed Doctor (Standard) in Cardiac Surgery. This is a fixed term contract with working at ST1-2 equivalent in the Cardiac Surgery Department. The posts will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, UHB. The post provides with opportunities to undertake complex and difficult work in a fully supported capacity in a leading edge teaching hospital.

This job is designed to be aimed at a doctor at the level of a Core Trainee with the relevant clinical skills to assess patients on the ward, outpatient department and A&E. There will be ample opportunities to attend operating theatres to observe, assist and be trained. It would be highly desirable for the candidate to possess basic surgical skills and or have experience in conduit harvesting.

The aim for this role is to gain sufficient experience in all areas (ward, clinic, ITU, A&E and theatres) to be able to progress to join our registrar rota. We have an excellent track record in helping candidates becoming successful at national selection for NTN posts at ST1 and formerly ST3 levels.

Main duties of the job

The LED will play a crucial role in the clinical teams of the relevant specialties. Where possible the opportunity to attend outpatient clinics and theatre lists will be made available.

There will be Consultant led ward rounds each day. In addition the post holder will attend regular ward rounds with the other junior team members. Cover at consultant level is always available.

The post holder will have an identified clinical and educational supervisor. They will be invited to attend the departmental meetings, as well as an active Post Graduate programme.
