University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Band 6 Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist/Radiographer

The closing date is 19 October 2025

Job summary

The Nuclear Medicine Service at UHB is a specialised diagnostic and treatment facility based on several sites: the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Good Hope Hospital (GH), Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (HH) and Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH). The case mix is highly specialised, therefore, some investigations and treatments provided at UHB would not be provided at an average district general hospital. The radionuclide therapy service is based across two sites and delivers a large number of therapies: I131 ablations, I131 for thyrotoxicosis, Y90 SIRT, Lu 177 PRRT plus others. We also plan to commence Lu 177 PSMA treatments (pending NICE approval) and you would have the opportunity to play a vital role in the introduction of a new radionuclide therapy to the department.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about providing the best service they can for patients and who has a keen interest in radionuclide therapies. Due to the fact that the service we provide is so specialised, consideration will be given to applicants with little experience in therapies but who demonstrate an enthusiasm for this area. In this circumstance appointment would be made under Annex 21 (formerly known as Annex U) whilst knowledge and skills in therapy are developed.

This position requires the candidate to be aware that there will be no relocation package provided by the Trust

Main duties of the job

The post holder will organise and deliver a wide range of radionuclide therapeutic procedures on behalf of the clinical oncologists.

On a daily basis they will be liaising with other technologists, Physicists, junior and senior medical staff, nursing and clerical staff.

As a senior member of staff they are required to work unsupervised during all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. They provide direct and indirect supervision to more junior staff.

They are responsible for the organisation of the routine daily and future workloads of the department, authorising investigations and allocating appointments for complex procedures.

The post holder will have a responsibility for performing a wide range of diagnostic procedures on patients of all ages who are suffering a wide range of illness, including cancer.

The post holder will be involved in the delivery and assessment of theoretical and practical training to junior members of staff and trainees.

The post-holder works in a highly specialised area which requires consideration of the risks of radiation and cross infection together with the empathy and skill to help patients through difficult and complex procedures.
