Are you a passionate and experienced nurse dedicated to paediatric patient safety? University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is seeking a Band 7 Paediatric Risk Governance Nurse to work operationally and strategically within Children's Services, supporting the implementation of the Children's Risk Management Strategy across UHB.

In this key role, you will lead efforts to enhance care quality by managing risk within paediatric departments. Your leadership will ensure consistent practice, uphold high standards, and promote innovation with a strong patient safety focus. Working alongside a dynamic multidisciplinary team, you will identify potential harm, support safety initiatives, and drive quality improvements.

You will promote robust Governance, Risk, and Assurance processes, provide expert advice, and embed research-led practice changes. Active participation in Clinical Governance, Paediatric Risk, Mortality Review, and Quality & Safety meetings is expected.

This role suits a nurse with recent clinical experience, attention to detail, and strong awareness of best practice guidelines. We seek a trustworthy, professional candidate with excellent communication, empathy, and critical thinking skills.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Risk Governance Nurse will communicate complex, sensitive information with empathy and professionalism.

You will support clinical incident investigations and complaints.

They will actively participate in governance meetings and reporting, lead open, compassionate inquiries into adverse events.

Responsibilities include disseminating lessons learned, promoting reflective practice, and fostering transparent staff relationships to drive positive change.

The role requires strong analytical skills to review incidents, advise on risk assessments, and coordinate action plans.

The post holder manages the clinical risk review system, ensuring timely investigation, reporting, and implementation of improvements aligned with PSIRF and national frameworks.

They provide specialist advice to clinical teams, promote safe practice, and maintain confidentiality.

The role supports policy development, audit, and education on risk management and Duty of Candour.

The nurse collaborates across multidisciplinary teams and external agencies to share best practice and enhance patient safety.
