University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Hospital Operations Director

The closing date is 23 September 2025

Job summary

Are you an experienced Associate Director or director-level hospital operations professional? Good Hope Hospital stands at an exciting crossroads and, as part of UHB's ambitious transformation under Executive Director,

Simon Jarvis, we're building the next generation of executive leaders.

This rare 12-month secondment, with a further possibility of being made substantive for the right candidate, offers a career-defining opportunity for director-level leadership within one of the region's most progressive hospitals. You'll work alongside the Hospital Executive Director, Director of Nursing and Medical Director to drive the strategic plan and provide expert leadership across performance, finance, service development, culture, HR and clinical operations.

Success requires you to have a proven track record in leading a team committed to delivering to NHS performance and quality standards within tight financial constraints. You'll need to be able to demonstrate strong strategic thinking and advise at Board level. A significant part of the role will involve driving further performance improvements in urgent and emergency care, elective recovery, and cancer pathways - whilst spearheading transformation initiatives.

Good Hope's blend of strong community connections and acute expertise creates the perfect environment to develop your capabilities, whilst making a tangible difference to the experience thousands of patients receive and 1500+ hospital colleagues.

Main duties of the job

As Hospital Operations Director, you'll be accountable for the comprehensive operational performance of Good Hope; ensuring safe, effective patient care and building sustainability. Your leadership will span all services, focusing on achieving national performance standards in urgent and emergency care, elective recovery and cancer pathways; challenges that demand both strategic thinking, strong leadership and operational expertise.

Your role encompasses leading annual capacity and demand planning, managing complex budgets across multiple service areas and driving new transformational change projects that deliver improvements to patient flow and experience. You will work closely with clinical service leads and service managers to implement new pathways, resolve operational challenges and embed our values of Kind, Connected and Bold in everything we do.

The latest CQC report issued July reported improvements in our ratings for urgent and emergency services and medical care. The hospital also received an overall 'good' rating for well-led. With our 2025 focus on leadership development and cultural transformation, you will be joining a hospital that's boldly reimagining what's possible when operational excellence meets genuine care for our people. From supporting our emergency department through winter pressures to leading service improvements that reduce waiting times, every day offers the chance to translate vision into reality for the communities we serve
