Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham and Birmingham Women's and Children's have developed a joint partnership Neonatal Community Outreach Service (NCOT). NCOT is a team of neonatal nurses providing continuing nursing care to premature babies in their home environment.
NCOT operate a 7-day service working from 8am to 6pm, including bank holidays. Successful candidates will be required to work between the Neonatal in-patient services and in the community setting. They will also need to provide cross cover on occasions between the 2 organisations.
Early discharge with the Community Service supports the family integrated care approach and enables families to take their baby home at the earliest opportunity whilst continuing to receive nursing support that meets their medical needs.
We are seeking a dynamic, motivated nurse that is passionate about delivering neonatal care within the community.
The band 5 NCOT nurse will be supported by the NCOT Lead nurse, senior nurses and Multi-disciplinary team to provide high quality care to babies covering a range of conditions including oxygen therapy, phototherapy, nasogastric tube (NGT) fed and babies that are less than 1.8kg at discharge or under 35 weeks gestation corrected as well as other medical or nursing needs.
As a band 5 NCOT Nurse you will work alongside the Senior NCOT Nurses and NCOT Lead Nurses to provide high quality care to families in the home environment.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will assess the suitability of referrals and ensure eligibility criteria is met. They will be involved with the discharge process to ensure a seamless, timely transfer from hospital to the home environment and communicate with families to prepare them for the transition home.
The post holder will risk assess patient needs, environment and care required during each visit.
The post holder will need recent Neonatal experience within a hospital setting to ensure they have the clinical knowledge to identify deterioration or recognise improvement of the patient and adapt care plans accordingly. They will need to be confident and competent with nursing skills which including blood sampling, NGT insertion and measuring observations.
As an autonomous practitioner they must have the ability to solve problems, confidently function in a lone worker capacity, effectively manage time and demonstrate excellent communication skills.
The post holder will practice in a holistic, non-judgmental, caring and compassionate manner that avoids assumptions, supports social inclusion and respects individual diversity. They will work in partnership with the MDT, service users, their carers and families. The post holder will contribute to the practice development within their clinical care setting and work in accordance with Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines and will be responsible for completing any work-based training associated with the role.
