Locally Employed Doctor (Higher) - General Surgery GHH

Job summary

This post represents a new and exciting opportunity at Good Hope Hospital for General Surgeons in Training aimed at surgical trainees at above ST3 level in General Surgery. The position would commence in October 2025 on a fixed term basis until 31st March 2026. The appointed candidate will be expected to provide support for a wide range of emergency general surgery services and elective services as part of their job plan which may also include independent clinics and theatre activity.

The successful applicant will be appointed to the Colorectal and General Surgery service at Good Hope Hospital part of University Hospitals Birmingham. The post will be particularly suited to above ST3 applicants are wishing to enhance their surgical training skills. You will be provided with a clinical supervisor and be expected to provide supervisory and leadership responsibilities to other surgical Resident Doctors at Good Hope. Good communication and participant interview skills are vital.

Main duties of the job

*Good clinical skills and be competent at managing the acute surgical on-call under supervision of the on-call consultant.

*Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

*Enthusiasm and the ability to demonstrate independent thinking and problem solving.

This will consist of providing General Surgical on-call (please note that the service will be changing this to a 1:9 registrar on-call rota from August 2025, subject to senior management team approval) and cover for the CEPOD emergency theatre. There will be an expectation to deliver a weekly contribution to elective activity in the form of outpatients and/or theatre sessions when not on-call or undertaking CEPOD. Supervisory responsibility to other surgical Resident Doctors in training.

Main clinical and on call sessions will be based at Good Hope Hospital, with the requirement to attend Solihull for some elective commitments. The appointed candidate will need to be flexible regarding their working pattern
