Band 9 Director of Group Finance

The closing date is 30 August 2025

Job summary

We are seeking an exceptional, values driven Director of Group Finance to be a part of the senior leadership team within the finance function at a pivotal time in our organisation's journey.

At UHB we are passionate about putting our patients and communities at the heart of everything we do with a vision to building healthier lives.

By nearly every measure, UHB is now one of the largest Trusts in the NHS, with an annual turnover of 2.6 billion, employing over 24,000 staff across our locations including four main hospital sites.

The NHS is facing significant financial challenges in 2025, with the need to do more with less. As demand grows, we are looking to strengthen our finance leadership through the appointment of a new Director of Group Finance, whose priority will be to manage the full cycle of the group financial reporting and planning processes.

Whilst challenging and often pressurised, the role is equal in reward and recognition. Our teams are driven to deliver, ardent about our values and focused on excellent patient care.

For an informal conversation about this position, please contact sarah.thomas2@uhb.nhs.uk (Deputy CFO) (pre 15/08) or julian.miller@uhb.nhs.uk (CFO) (post 15/08).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to lead all statutory and external reporting requirements, strategic financial planning including Annual and Medium-Term Plans and coordination of internal budget setting at business unit level in line with the Trust's overall financial plans.

The role includes responsibility for the transactional finance functions including Treasury, General Ledgers, Capital Accounting, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable (including private patients and overseas visitors).

The post holder will lead the functions to deliver all external reporting including (but not limited to) statutory annual report and accounts (and the audit thereof), national cost collection returns, corporate benchmarking and ERIC returns.

The post holder will be responsible for the financial management and business partnering functions for Corporate services and the Trust's Research, Development and Innovation business units.

The postholder will also provide the senior leadership for the capital programme of the Trust routinely in excess of 100m in investments per annum.
