Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow in Vascular Access and Renal Transplant Surgery. This post would commence as soon as possible, based at QE Hospital Birmingham.
The post-holder will be expected to complete a research project with the intention of completing an MD (potentially a PhD) which will be registered at the University of Birmingham.
We anticipate this post would be appropriate for an OOPR for a trainee in either general surgery or vascular surgery.
The research relates to the role of Factor X1a inhibitors in both primary and secondary prevention of thrombosis in arterio-venous access for haemodialysis. The research is purely clinical.
Part will relate to prospectively collected observational data relating to risk scoring for fistulae at a high risk of requiring intervention. Part will be related to design and organisation of a phase III trial investigating the role of factor XIa inhibitors in primary and secondary prevention of thromboses in AV access.
The unit has a track record of research fellows completing higher degrees. In addition to limited clinical activity, there is the opportunity for individuals to train surgically and clinically in vascular access.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will contribute to the clinical activities of the vascular access and renal transplant clinical team.
Multiple dedicated vascular access clinics currently run with clinical and ultrasound facilities to allow comprehensive assessment of patients with vascular access. Vascular access care is provided by a multidisciplinary team with dedicated co-ordinators, radiologists, clinics and theatre lists and a weekly vascular access MDT. There are five all day theatre lists per week and one cystoscopy list.
The post is expected to provide excellent high volume operative experience allowing supervised training in vascular surgery and anastomotic techniques (greater than 400 procedures are performed within the unit per year).
This year we anticipate there being approximately 200 renal transplants in total, half of which occur during daylight hours enabling the post-holder to potentially gain significant exposure to renal transplantation over the course of this post.
There will be exposure to provision of peri-operative care for renal patients with twice daily combined medical/surgical ward rounds.
This would ideally suit a trainee surgeon with an interest in vascular or transplant surgery.
