University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Band 4 Cancer Support Worker - Breast Care

The closing date is 24 August 2025

Job summary

Band 4 Breast Cancer Support Worker (CSW) posts -- 37.5 hours per week

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join this well-established specialist breast care nursing service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. This post will primarily be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site and with further development we hope to have a second post at Solihull site. However, the post holders will need to work together and cross cover for each other. They will need to be able to work on both of these Trust sites on occasion. These posts are full time, and job share will be considered. The posts are offered as fixed term contracts until 31/3/27.

The post holders will work as part of the team, working closely with the Specialist Nurses but also alongside surgeons and oncologists. We aim to deliver a high quality service to our patients and this includes the implementation of patient initiated follow up (PIFU). Patients will be offered holistic needs assessments (HNAs) which the CSW will use to assess situations and to offer support. The CSW will need to discuss issues with patients over the telephone and face to face. They will also need to ensure patients on a self supported follow up programme have their needs met such as routine imaging. These patients need to be tracked on a database so IT skills would be an advantage. Previous experience of working with cancer patients would be an advantage.

Main duties of the job

This role involves supporting patients with breast disease such as breast cancer or those who have an increased risk of the disease. This includes helping to support them through the diagnosis and treatment phases alongside a team of CNSs, surgeons and oncologists. Good communication skills are essential as you will need to be confident to talk to patients and return phone calls to patients who have questions about their progress.

Breast cancer patients are being offered a self-supported follow up programme once their initial treatment is complete. Holistic Needs assessment questionnaires are given to the patients to highlight any issues they have coping with their diagnosis and treatment. The CSW role will involve discussing these issues and offering support as well as signposting to other agencies. This will include liaising with other health professionals including psychology, Acute Oncology and the cancer information teams across the Trust.

Patients on a follow up pathway will need various tests including imaging and the CSW will be involved tracking the results and ensuring patients are informed of results in a timely fashion
