Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist within the Haematology department. We are looking for enthusiastic, highly motivated individuals to help deliver a first-class service to our users.

We are one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England and is composed of 4 hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital.

Additional funding has been awarded to recognise the growth within our Trust. In 2024 we saw our new £45 million elective hub at Solihull Hospital open, Heartlands Treatment Centre became fully operational, and our services continued to expand at Good Hope and QE.

The department receives over a million requests annually, providing a 24hr diagnostic and monitoring service. The laboratory is ISO15189 & MHRA accredited, approved for IBMS training and military training facility. Additionally, the laboratory situated on the QEH site is the nominated Coagulation laboratory for the West Midlands Regional Haemophilia comprehensive care service, and a designated Trauma Centre.

Applicants will rotate through Haematology, Coagulation & Blood Transfusion. The ideal candidate must be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a relevant IBMS Specialist Portfolio. You must have UK laboratory experience as a BMS, with a specialist interest in Haematology, having a sound theoretical and practical knowledge. Further study, scientific posters & papers, CPD are strongly encouraged and supported.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for performing the technical tasks to meet the needs of the laboratory service, in line with HCPC standards of proficiency. This includes analysis, technical validation, interpretive decisions, and reporting of samples to achieve efficient and effective patient care and resource management. You will be expected to work collaboratively within the laboratory team. You will be committed to providing a high standard of service to our patients and partake in the quality programme of the laboratory. You should have an understanding of legislation, regulation and the maintenance of compliance with ISO 15189:2022.

After appropriate training you will be expected to participate in the departmental shift system which attracts AFC enhanced payments.

Applications will be considered from individuals who require the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology & Hospital Transfusion Science. In these circumstances successful applicant salaries will be as per AFC Annex 21 - 70% of the top of band 6 until awarded the diploma, which would be expected to be completed in less than two years.
