Job summary

This Consultant Nephrologist (1.0 WTE) post will be based in the Department of Renal Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

This post will have three main components:

i)The delivery of care for peritoneal dialysis patients at QEH with service development of our urgent PD start pathway

ii)Support to our advanced kidney care service with a focus on enhancing CAPD rates

iii)Contribution to internal medicine

The post holder will be an integral part of our CAPD service. There will be a focus on enhancing our home therapy rates and an opportunity to become a key member of the regional quality improvement KQIP initiative of improving access to home therapies.

The appointee will be expected to contribute to internal medicine, with support for urgent and emergency care including participating in the acute unselected take. The successful appointee will be part of a diverse team of clinicians contributing to UEC, with the option to participate in service development and educational opportunities for an interested individual.

Main duties of the job

As a consultant the appointee will have full responsibilities for patients under their care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure.

The appointee will share clinical responsibility with colleagues in running the clinical work of the department.

The appointee will play a role in meeting the department's contracted obligations for the provision of renal services and in ensuring that the overall performance of the unit meets the quality criteria agreed with the purchasing consortia.

Job plan:

The job plan varies on a week-by-week basis, based on a 48 week cycle that typically includes up to 10 weeks dedicated to in-patient work. This work is distributed between a 3 day weekend block of weekend acutes at QEH and 7 day in-patient care on renal wards up to 4 weeks per year. Total weekend on-call frequency will not exceed 1:6 weekends (in patient average 1.5 PA).

2 SPAs--1.5 core SPA for revalidation/appraisal purposes/audit and 0.5 additional SPA for educational supervision

4 PA for CAPD clinic/AKC clinic and CAPD MDT time

2 PA for Acute internal medicine focussed around support for urgent and emergency care including support to the weekend rota.

0.5 PA for DCC dependent on the clinical interest of the successful candidate
