Clinical Service Lead - General Internal Medicine

Job summary

An exciting opportunity for a Clinical Service Lead within General Internal Medicine, the newly formed General Medicine directorate is now available at Good Hope Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking for highly motivated, innovative and skilled individuals to join our team of Consultants with any other medical speciality. This is a new General Internal Medicine post with operational and nursing support and opportunities for education and training in General Internal Medicine for Resident Doctors.

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities

Main Clinical Service Lead Responsibilities:

3.1.1To be the strategic and operational leader for the specialty.

3.1.2To work with the management team to achieve the Trust's strategic aims and objectives.

3.1.3To develop with clinical colleagues and the management team, a clinical services strategy in keeping with the Trust's strategic vision and support the management team with the implementation thereof.

3.1.4To provide leadership for Consultant colleagues.

3.1.5To work effectively with the senior non-Medical staff for the service to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to the quality of care and the management of the service.

3.1.6To chair a Consultants meeting to share with colleagues ongoing plans, strategic decisions and the Team Brief. This would normally be monthly but could vary according to the size of the speciality.

3.1.7To contribute to specialty meetings Clinical Delivery Groups management teams, with particular responsibility for making the best use of Trust resources and operational issues involving medical staff.

3.1.8To ensure that the Consultant rota is appropriately managed.

3.1.9To ensure that Consultant colleagues meet their contractual obligations.

3.1.10To ensure Consultant colleagues have completed their mandatory training.

3.1.11With support of the relevant General Manager, to ensure that the Consultants' annual & study leave is appropriately managed to ensure the smooth running of the Department and to minimise disruption to the service.

3.1.12To ensure that the annual appraisal and revalidation process for Consultants within the specialty is undertaken

3.1.13To undertake job plan reviews for all Consultants ensuring that Consultant job plans and objectives are aligned to the service requirements and the annual plan process.

3.1.14To work with the management team and consultant colleagues to ensure that the specialty delivers its activity and operational targets (e.g. cancer, RTT and Unscheduled Care etc), and that the service remains within identified pay and non-pay budgets.

3.1.15To work with the Consultants and the management team to ensure that agreed productivity and efficiency goals are maximised (e.g. length of stay, theatre productivity, discharge standards etc)

3.1.16To work with the management team to ensure that patient pathways are streamlined and best practice pathways are adopted where possible

3.1.17To lead on identification of cost improvements involving medical resource decisions.

3.1.18To ensure that the service has appropriate clinical governance arrangements.

3.1.19To ensure that the service, including Consultant colleagues, support trust-wide clinical governance through contributions to division led or trust led investigations and root cause analyses

3.1.20To manage resident medical staffing;

a)To work with HR to ensure the timely advertisement of replacement posts and minimise the requirements for, and duration of, locum appointments.

b)To ensure that resident medical staffing is compliant with EWTD and resident doctor hours.

c)To ensure that resident medical staff completes their contractual obligations to the Trust and the specialty delivers its contractual obligation to the Trainees in collaboration with the Education department.

d)To ensure that resident medical staff are up to date with required mandatory training.
