University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Diabetologist / Endocrinologist

The closing date is 22 May 2025

Job summary

Applications are warmly invited from energetic and enthusiastic candidates to join our team at Heartlands Hospital. The successful candidate will join a friendly, dynamic consultant team who strive to be regional leaders in the delivery of high quality, compassionate, patient-centred, multi-disciplinary care in EDM, including teaching, training, and research. The successful candidate would be contributing to both EDM in-patients' and outpatients' activities.

EDM department at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital is dedicated to delivering comprehensive diabetes and endocrinology services locally and regionally, including pancreas and islet transplant, neuropathy, MODY, tier 3 weight management and sub-specialist endocrine services with close links and access to specialist services at QEH. Sub-speciality interests are encouraged but not required for these posts.

A full range of associated healthcare professionals are on site in a purpose-built Diabetes Centre, including dietitian, podiatrists, diabetes specialist nurses, and endocrine specialist nurses, supporting MDT working pattern. The post holder will be expected to engage with the multidisciplinary team and will have the opportunity to take part in one of the sub-specialist clinics or to develop a subspecialty interest of their own.

Main duties of the job

Our New Consultant colleagues will join us providing care across our service. Inpatient duties are covered by 2 duty colleagues, resulting in an approximately 1:4 inpatient commitment. Out-of-hours working is undertaken 1:8, including weekend (resident) sessions.

The post holders will provide EDM Out-Patient Clinics plus other Direct Clinical Care as detailed in the Outline Job plan at the end of this document.

A shared office, equipped with a computer and telephone, will be provided, and will be supported by appropriate secretarial time.

The department trains the full range of junior doctors and makes a large contribution to undergraduate education. The post holders would be expected to contribute to these activities. Please note that due to the changing needs of the service the post holders may be required to adopt a flexible approach together with the other consultant members of the EDM team.

Our unit is research active, with participation in a wide selection of topic areas. Educational and Clinical supervision is supported by all departmental colleagues. Participation in our weekly educational meetings is expected, as part of our commitment to excellence in patient care.
