Job responsibilities

MANAGEMENT, SUPERVISORY, TEACHING, TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

Consultants who are appointed will be expected to complete the required training and become educational supervisors and participate in departmental teaching and training.

There will be opportunities to take up additional management and lead roles as consultants progress through their career.

On Call Commitments

There are several on call tiers to cover the out of hours' service:

1. General on call: 1:15 covering the emergency theatre with a resident CT2 or above

2. Obstetric on call: 1:12 covering the maternity unit at Heartlands with a ST3 or above

3. Solihull EPOC on call: 1:10 with at ST3 or above

4. Thoracic on call: 1:8 covering thoracic emergencies at the QE and providing a second pair of hands to Heartlands Hospital

5. Good Hope on call: 1:12 covering the emergency theatre with a resident CT1 or above and the maternity unit with a SAS doctor.

6. There is also an intensivist on call for Heartlands and one for Good Hope.

On call commitments for this post are to either of the following:

1. the General on call rota on the Heartlands Emergency theatre
2. Paediatric cases over the age of 2 are also cared for
3. The Obstetric on call rota at Heartlands.

Teaching & Training

The successful applicant would be expected to have an active interest in the areas of both teaching and research. Our resident anaesthetic training has recently been adapted to reflect the new RCOA Anaesthesia curriculum. Due to the number of specialties covered at the Trust, we can deliver most of the curriculum across our four sites except advanced paediatric cases. We have therefore recently invited applications for trainees wishing to pursue a CESR pathway. Training is coordinated by the specialty education leads but involves informal and formal teaching by all consultants. There is also a departmental programme of teaching mapped to RCOA examination requirements which is co-ordinated by the resident anaesthetic staff with support from consultants.

UHB has an obligation to teach medical students and a commitment to the Birmingham and Warwickshire Schools of Anaesthesia. Involvement in structured teaching and lecturing to

both these groups will be expected. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer in the university department of medical sciences.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

The Trust has an active Research and Development Department that helps with ethical committee submissions, planning, and funding for research projects. Within the departments of Anaesthesia & Critical Care at HGS there are two Professorial posts, an NIHR senior lecturer and a team if research nurses. The department encourages interest in and support of any ongoing research projects.

UHB has academic links with University of Birmingham, University of Warwick and Aston University and has a dedicated research facility -- MIDRU, which has the clinical trials pharmacy team and research laboratory.

The post holder will be encouraged to support the ongoing trials and participate in new research.

Clinical Audit & Governance

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.

The Trust is committed to the development and maintenance of the highest clinical standards through individual appraisal. This will include the audit of personal and clinical practice, as well as involvement in departmental and specialty reviews. It will also involve attention to continuing professional development, to meet the requirements for continuing medical education as expected by the relevant Royal College, and the awareness of professional standards, with the responsibility to undertake safe and ethical clinical practice and the importance of responding promptly to any circumstances which may result in increased clinical risk or adverse outcome.

Funding is available for approved study leave as defined in the Trust study leave policy. Current entitlements are 10 days of study or professional leave a year and 1,500 study leave budget a year.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the Directorate and Departmental audit and quality improvement programme. In addition, the department is currently engaging with the RCOA Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) and successful candidates are expected to participate in this.

Quarterly department governance meetings allow for the presentation and discussion of M&M cases, quality improvement projects and updates both as a whole department and in specialty groups.

Qualifications

Essential

• *GMC Registration

• *FRCA or equivalent

Desirable

• *Evidence of extended training and experience in the assessment and management of patients undergoing anaesthesia in a wide variety of specialties including major general surgery, vascular and urology surgery

Experience

• *Experience in the perioperative care of patients including pain management
• *Advanced sub speciality training in anaesthesia for: Vascular or Pain or Thoracic or Major General surgery

Desirable

• *Experience in the perioperative care of patients including pain management
