Job summary
The Critical Care Unit at QEHB is one of the largest single site critical care units in Europe. It is a mixed Level 2 and Level 3 facility, currently open to 67 ITU equivalent beds, and admitting over 4000 patients per year. There are 46 Consultant Intensivists, over 450 nursing staff and 15 Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, supported by allied health professionals and several tiers of medical staff in training from anaesthetics, intensive care medicine and other medical specialities.
The QEHB is the tertiary hub for the West Midlands, with a total catchment area of approximately 9 million people for all specialities. It has a world-renowned solid organ transplantation encompassing transplantations in liver, kidney and heart-lung recipients as well as one of the countrys largest bone-marrow and stem cell programs including CAR-T.
The QEHB site conducts complex oncological surgery for hepatobiliary, pancreatic, upper gastrointestinal and sarcoma surgery and is a regional centre for neurosciences, It is also a Major Trauma Centre, a regional Burns centre and hosts the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine. We deliver an elective cardiac surgery programme and a tertiary referral unit for emergency cardiac surgical patients, including those requiring cardiac mechanical device support.
Main duties of the job
Candidates will be expected to have higher specialist training in ICM and have passed the FICM (or equivalent) and be eligible for registration on the GMC specialist register. It is essential for applicants to have worked in a major tertiary ICU with experience of neurosciences and major trauma. Candidates should be able to demonstrate that they are highly motivated individuals capable of working in a broad multi-disciplinary team. Applications from candidates with experience in research, management and educational backgrounds are encouraged.
The core component of this post is to provide critical care cover at the QE Critical Care Unit. A standard full time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities. A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours and a full-time consultant. The ITU DCC component will be 5.3PAs with 2PAs be devoted to supporting professional activities. The remaining PAs will be made from a complementary speciality (e.g. Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine). For applicants who are single speciality ICM, a bespoke job plan will be created with 8PAs being direct clinical commitments. The critical care component will include sessions supporting Critical Care Outreach.
