Band 6 Scanning DXA Radiographer/Clinical Technologist (20-hours per week part-time)
We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed radiographer/clinical technologist to join our DXA scanning team at Queen Elizabeth hospital.
We provide a comprehensive diagnostic and research scanning service to hospital specialities and GPs.
Expected working pattern is:
- Monday: 2.5-hour shift (17:30 - 20:00)
- Tuesday: 5.5-hour shift (14:30 - 20:00)
- Friday: 12-hour shift (07:30 - 20:00)
DXA scanning experience is desirable but training could be provided. Applicants should be able to work independently after initial assessment and training has been completed and signed off.

Main duties of the job
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
*To undertake unsupervised and be accountable for bone density scans of patients and maintain the highest possible standard of radiography, frequently working alone.
*To check and verify bone densitometry requests, against agreed protocols, for clinical appropriateness.
*To assess the condition of the patients and determine the most appropriate and effective method of examination.
*To ensure bone evaluations are acquired to a high standard to allow appropriate diagnostic reporting of bone density results.
*To analyse bone density examinations using manufacturer specific software or in-house analysis techniques according to departmental protocols or as instructed and to transfer completed scans to PACS.
*To provide a high level of patient care throughout the patient's attendance, paying particular attention to the welfare and dignity of all patients undergoing bone density evaluation. Be responsible for ensuring that at all times the needs of the patient are met and that confidentiality of patient data is maintained.
*To provide complex, sensitive detailed and accurate information to patients undergoing bone density examination. Convey such information to patients in a manner and using terminology that is easily understood. Be aware of limits of own knowledge, referring patients to a more senior member of staff where required answers exceeds level of own knowledge/understanding.

- *BSc Hons Clinical Technology (Diploma), Honours degree or DCR in Radiography or other relevant subject or equivalent.
- *Voluntary registration as a Clinical technologist or state registration as a Radiographer with the Clinical Science Board of the Health Professions Council

- *In-depth practical experience of DXA scanning.
- *Record of CPD and PDRS assessments, or equivalent evidence of career progression.
- *At least 18 months relevant experience at post-first degree level.
- Clinical:
- *Possesses the analytical skills and judgment to deal with complex situations such as determining appropriate procedures for patients, balancing risks and benefits, and choosing appropriate analysis methods for calculation & presentation of results.
- *Has the investigative, technical & lateral thinking skills to be able to solve day-to-day practical problems with bone density measurement, and to trouble-shoot causes of unusual or incorrect results, using judgment to take appropriate remedial action.
- *Has the knowledge & experience to provide specialist advice to clinical staff, patients and carers about osteoporosis and bone density measurement and to be able to explain complex issues such as the pathophysiology of osteoporosis and potential risks from ionising radiation.
- Managerial:
- *Able to exercise initiative and act with autonomy when dealing with issues within own specialist areas of competence.
- Legislation:
- *In-depth understanding of radiation protection principles and legislation, eg IRMER2017 & IRR17, national & international standards, professional & regulatory body reports and guidelines.
