Salary (31,473 - 33,721), rising to Band 6 (37,338 -- 44,962) on completion of training.

An exciting development opportunity has arisen spanning Radiotherapy Physics Technical Services and the Clinical Computing and Imaging Sciences Service (CCISS) for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual who is looking to develop a career in radiation engineering and clinical scientific computing within the NHS.

We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate a genuine interest in engineering and clinical computing with a practical mind-set, who are self-motivated and can demonstrate good communications skills with an ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

The successful candidate will ideally have a Beng/ or BSc honours degree in Electronics or Mechanical Engineering, however applicants who possess a Level 4 qualification in a relevant subject with experience and skills equivalent to an Electronics or Mechanical engineering degree will also be considered.

The successful applicant will be required to complete the two-year IPEM Clinical Technologist Training scheme (leading to registration on the Register of Clinical Technologists), and an in-house assessment of professional abilities and performance before progressing to a Band 6 Senior Clinical Technologist position. Prior to this the post will be graded at Annex 21, Band 6.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be involved in the maintenance and management of the equipment in the radiotherapy service, including linear accelerators, imaging devices and their computerised control systems. This will require the development of skills in electronic and mechanical engineering, and in computer control and management systems. The postholder will also develop skills in clinical computer science as appropriate to support clinical activity across the radiotherapy department.

The postholder will follow the IPEM Clinical Technologist Training scheme for Radiation Engineering but with a particular focus on radiotherapy treatment computer systems. The in-house training programme will be provided by our team of experienced registered radiation engineers and staff from the Clinical Computing and Imaging Sciences Service (CCISS), with an expectation for the successful candidate to balance the demands of the training scheme with a requirement for independent self-study.

The Job Description and Person Specification attached are for the qualified Band 6 Senior Clinical Technologist position.   • *Extensive specialist knowledge of analogue, digital and power electronic components, devices, systems and design, electro-mechanical systems and equipment support and repair.
  • *Evidence of Continued Professional Development in Medical Physics especially in the field of electronics engineering applied to radiotherapy technologies.
  • *Good working knowledge and practical experience of a range of specialist treatment machine Quality Control procedures including radiation dosimetry and adjustment of radiation beam parameters.
  • *Knowledge of the hazards, including ionising radiation, encountered in medical equipment maintenance and production activities and the necessary precautions required.
  • *Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure or human error and of the critical requirement for accuracy in Quality Control of radiotherapy equipment.
