Job summary

UHB is seeking to appoint a dynamic individual for the role of Managing Director for Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) as a senior post at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) they will be responsible for the strategic and inspired leadership of RD&I activity and hosted research infrastructures. This is a highly visible role, and the post holder will demonstrate strong presence and personal leadership across the Trust. There is a strong research record at UHB, and the post holder will create a culture to enable all staff groups to engage in research and ensure the needs of our population are met. RD&I activity is conducted at all UHB's hospital sites and representation or our portfolio at a local, regional and national level will be required. The post holder will work closely with the Chief Medical Officer, Hospital Executive Directors and other members of the Executive Team to lead a research and innovation portfolio in line with Trust values and priorities.

Main duties of the job

Working with the Clinical Director, Director of Research, Development and Innovation and Director of Healthcare Data Research, the Managing Director will oversee a significant portfolio of research activity. The post-holder will hold the RD&I senior leadership team to account for their areas of work and will jointly embed behaviours inspiring high performance, innovation and accountability. Additionally, support will be provided to the Clinical Directors and Research Applications Service to provide opportunities for scholarships and fellows, to ensure the department continues to nurture future research leaders.

The RD&I departments includes responsibility for UHB's research delivery teams, research and research data governance, research applications and grant submission and study sponsorship. Several local and regional programmes are also hosted by the department and under the leadership of the post holder, including: Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), Birmingham Clinical Research Facility (CRF), Birmingham Inflammation Research Facility (IRF), Birmingham HealthTech Research Centre, West Midlands Secure Data Environment, PIONEER acute data hub, INSIGHT ophthalmic data hub, PATHWAY UHB data hub, Incubator for AI & Digital Healthcare, Centre for Rare Diseases, Medical Innovation Department & Research Unit and the Birmingham Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. UHB is also a core part of Birmingham Health Partners.
