Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a centre of Pathology excellence at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), one of the largest teaching hospitals in England. We have state of the art facilities across 4 sites (Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope & Solihull hospitals).
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic & experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and busy Specialist Chemistry & Toxicology section within the Department of Chemistry, Immunology and Toxicology based primarily at the Heartlands Site.

The Specialist Testing & Toxicology section provides a wide range of services including specialist chromatography and mass spectrometry. The section utilises a multitude of analytical techniques including LC-HRAM, LC-MS/MS, GC, HPLC, GC-MS and ICP-MS from a number of different vendors (SCIEX, Waters, Thermo, Agilent, Shimadzu, Perkin Elmer)
Main duties of the job
The Specialist Chemistry & Toxicology section currently operates shifts from 8am-6pm (Mon-Fri) but due to growing service demand, may in future operate between 8am-8pm including weekends & public holidays.
The vacancy is a static Band 5 BMS post in Specialist Chemistry and Toxicology. Experience & knowledge of specialist assays, chromatography & mass spectrometry is essential. Applicants must be HCPC registered.
The candidate will be expected to have a good understanding of areas within Clinical Chemistry & Toxicology & take an active role in an extensive analytical provision for UHB, other hospitals & HM Coroner. Excellent teamwork & communication skills are essential.
The post holder will be responsible for performing tasks to meet the needs of the service. This includes a range of technical, scientific, professional & clinical duties to achieve the objectives of efficient & effective patient care, ensuring that laboratory needs are met to deliver a quality clinical service including but not limited to:
*Safely handle, use & dispose of biological samples including blood, urine, faeces, CSF, body tissues & other body fluids/samples &
hazardous &/or radioactive chemicals
*Undertake maintenance on a range of specialised lab instruments prior to them being used for patient investigations
*Maintain compliance with good laboratory practice, quality assurance procedures in accordance with UKAS ISO 15189
*Technically validate, interpret & report results within agreed turnaround times
