Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within clinical Microbiology for an experienced and enthusiastic BMS to join as a senior BMS. This opportunity is fixed term for 12 months or can be offered as a secondment to attain experience within the role of a senior BMS.

You will be required to have Microbiology experience and a minimum of a level 7 qualification. While previous experience is desired full training within the senior role will be proved to the successful candidate.

As a Senior Biomedical Scientist, the post holder is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a section within the department, performing a wide range of highly specialised and diagnostic techniques, to deliver a fit-for-purpose laboratory service. These tasks include analysis, technical validation, interpretive decision making and clinical reporting for effective patient management and quality of service.

This requires the post holder to communicate with others including those of their grade, more senior staff, clinicians, and service users. The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within any of the sections of the department; this may be on a rotational basis maintain skills in different areas. They will be expected to maintain competency and specialist knowledge for their work and must be able to train and motivate staff.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will be expected to have a good understanding of areas within Microbiology and Virology and also be able to maintain and progress quality initiatives and innovative approach. We are looking for people who work well within a team and have a patient focused attitude.

In providing a 24-hour, 7 day health service, there is requirement for ability to work extended day, working at weekends and on statutory and public holidays as necessary; and participation in overnight shift or on-call as applicable.

Main Duties

- To manage and organise the day to day operation within your sub-section, maintaining SOP's and producing a competent workforce through Training and Competence.

- To safely handle, biology samples such as blood, urine, faeces, other body tissue and hazardous and/or radioactive chemicals. Be aware these samples can isolate ACDP hazard group 2 and 3 organisms.

- To maintain compliance with good laboratory practice, IQC procedures in accordance within the standards of UKAS ISO 15189:2003.

- Undertake technical validation of the results produced in laboratory investigations to ensure their accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory and quality protocols.

- To ensure that all results are reported within the agreed turnaround time and report to an Operational Manager any non-compliance.

- To be familiar with an ensure compliance to national, Trust and department Health and Safety policies e.g. risk assessments and COSHH assessments.
