Job summary
We are seeking to recruit a senior fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics to work in the knee team, who is interested in the field of complex knee problems, trauma and post-trauma reconstruction of the knee.
This post is suitable for a senior post-CCT trainee who would like to improve their skills in the management various knee conditions. It is expected that the appointee will have experience in the field of general trauma and orthopaedics. Previous experience in the field is essential. Good communication skills are essential, as this post involves liaising with multidisciplinary teams.
The Fellow will play a crucial role in the knee team, having access to elective & trauma theatre sessions and outpatient clinics. This will involve complex acute knee trauma and elective conditions. Elective Surgery is based at the nearby Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
The post is for a period of 6 months extendable for a further 6 months.
Main duties of the job
Applicants should have completed a recognised Orthopaedic training programme and should have or should be about to secure the CCT/CCST.
Senior Fellow is a UHB developed arrangement to offer specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Part of the Knee Fellow's job is based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital -- Northfield, Birmingham.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital are both tertiary referral hospitals - thus the job provides ample opportunity to look after patients with complicated knee problems like Multi-ligament knee injury and Patello femoral instability along with major trauma and routine knee conditions.

There is no on call but the fellow will be expected to carry out 2 regular day time work every 6th weekend.
The job involves independent operating lists. Towards the later part of job, the Fellow will be expected to undertake independent list consisting of joint replacement (e.g. TKR, UKR, PFJR); soft tissue operations (e.g. Arthroscopy and ACL reconstruction); fracture fixation (e.g. IM nailing, Ankle fixation, tibial plateau fixation).
The fellow will be responsible for the day to day administration of the team clinical inpatient load. This will involve pre-operative planning and post-operative care in conjunction with the consultant.
The fellow may be expected to perform some of the weekend sessions with the knee team but will not participate in the general on call rota. He will also be expect to provide some on call cover during normal office hours to support the department but not at the expense of the clinical exposure from the fellowship.
