Job summary
This consultant nephrologist post with an interest in and job plan configured to provide advanced kidney care and chronic kidney disease will be based in the Department of Renal Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
This post will have two main components:
i)rotation through the in-patient renal medicine service at QEHB with a proportion of inpatient time configured to support the care of general internal medicine patients (maximum of 1 PA).
ii)the delivery of care for patients requiring advanced kidney care and chronic kidney disease including out-patient clinics, multi-professional team leadership, and service development and research, and dialysis patient management. The activity will be delivered at three main sites (QEH Birmingham, Smethwick Kidney Treatment Centre, Community CKD services).
There are multiple active research, quality improvement and teaching opportunities within chronic kidney disease and advanced kidney care specifically and UHB Renal services generally and the successful appointee will contribute to these. There is the opportunity to negotiate up to 1 PA of protected research time initially funded for 3 years for research aligned to AKC. The expectation is for the post holder to develop AKC services at QEH site and to subsequently lead our AKC service, they will be supported to gain leadership skills if required.

Main duties of the job
As a consultant the appointee will have full responsibilities for patients under his/her care within the context
of a multidisciplinary team structure.
The appointee will share clinical responsibility with colleagues in running the clinical work of the department.
The appointee will play a role in meeting the department's contracted obligations for the provision of renal
services and in ensuring that the overall performance of the unit meets the quality criteria agreed with the
purchasing consortia.
Job plan:
The job plan varies on a week by week basis, based on a 48 week cycle that typically includes up to 12 weeks
dedicated to in-patient work, distributed between the 7-day "acute" service, comprising 4 week days and a 3
day weekend block and 7 day in-patient care on renal wards up to 6 weeks per year. During winter pressures a
commitment to supporting GIM in-patients is required (up to a maximum of 1PA per week averaged across the
year) with adjustment made to the amount of renal ward frequency. Weekend on-call frequency will not exceed
1:6 weekends.
2 SPAs --1 core SPA for revalidation/appraisal purposes and 1 additional SPA focused on work aligned to the
Department priorities and requirements for research and service development
1 SPA for research in AKC and CKD may be negotiated
1.0.5 PA for dialysis out-patient and quality assurance meetings
1 PA for community CKD service
2 PA for MDTs and leadership meetings within AKC
2.5 PA for AKC clinics per week
