Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 Band 6 Registered Nurse to join the team on the Haematology & Oncology Day Unit at Heartlands Hospital.

We are seeking to recruit motivated skilled nurses with a minimum of 12 months post registration experience chemotherapy nurses to join our existing team chemotherapy team.

The unit is a nurse led unit and the post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and toxicity assessment pre administration of chemotherapy.

Provide a specialist Oncology and Haematology nursing service to patients, families, carers and health professionals by demonstrating advanced clinical knowledge of the principles of the safe delivery of chemotherapy and supportive products within an out-patient setting.

All training is supported by the Systemic Anti-Cancer (SACT) Nurse Trainers. and development will be supported.

Training will be supported in management duties such as appraisals, and sick reviews.

We aim to provide an individualized and supportive environment for patients. Supporting junior team helping them develop their skills to reach their full potential.

Main duties of the job

Co-ordinate patient care, proceeding patients chemotherapy and liaising with the wider MDT

Ensure patients receive high quality care and a positive patient experience, having regard to their customs, beliefs and ethnicity.

Act as advocate for patients, to ensure a patient focused approach to delivery of care. Understanding of the principles of safeguarding and mental Capacity.

Taking charge of the day unit and coordinating staff

Have excellent cannulation skills.

Have accountability for correct administration of chemotherapy and other forms of supportive care.

Have awareness of neutropenic sepsis and the sepsis pathway

Undertaking quality improvement initiatives such as audits, research, and service development projects. In the absence of the Senior nurse, take charge of the clinical area to ensure effective operation of the department.

The post holder will contribute to the practice development within their clinical care setting and work in accordance with Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines and will be responsible for completing mandatory training, or role base training

Provide specialist research-based education and training to staff

Sick reviews and Appraisals

Dealing with complaints

Maintain a safe, clean environment. Ensuring that hazards on the day unit are reported appropriately without delay, and ensure all equipment required is in good working order
