Job summary

Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellowship in oesophago-gastric surgery. Previous experience of oesophago-gastric surgery is not essential. The post offers excellent surgical experience to those wishing to broaden their exposure to both malignant and benign oesophago-gastric disease.

Main duties of the job

This Fellowship offers unique exposure to complex benign oesophago-gastric and malignant oesophago-gastric surgery. The Unit works in concert with our therapeutic endoscopy team to provide endoscopic treatment to dysplastic lesions and early cancers of the upper GI tract. The sarcoma service also offers surgical support to the regional hospitals for upper GI emergencies. In addition, the Fellow will have the opportunity to learn upper GI endoscopy and gain further experience in general and emergency surgery.

A central part of this post will entail a significant contribution to the academic and research activities which are ongoing in the department.

Job responsibilities

The Trust was designated a Level 1 Trauma Centre in April 2011 in line with national recommendations for the planning and provision of care for seriously injured patients and went online as a Major trauma Centre in April 2012.

The Centre for Defence Medicine is based within this Trust. Military casualties from abroad are airlifted to the unit once they have been stabilised and usually are under the care of the dedicated trauma teams. The Centre for Defence Medicine is fully integrated into the Trust and military personnel work in all departments, with emphasis on SAU and ITU.

OESOPHAGO-GASTRIC SURGERY UNIT

The Upper GI Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is a tertiary cancer centre covering a population of just under two million, taking referrals from Sandwell, City, Walsall Manor and Dudley Hospitals. It undertakes approximately 80 to 100 major cancer resections per year as well as a full range of complex benign Upper GI surgery excluding bariatric surgery. There are currently four full time Upper GI consultants (Mr John Whiting, Prof. Ewen Griffiths, Ms. Sonia Puig, Mr Benjamin Tan) who provide 24/7 Upper GI emergency cover to the region as well as taking part in unselected, general surgical, emergency cover with the Colorectal surgeons.

ON-CALL ACTIVITY AND EMERGENCY SURGERY

UHB provides a comprehensive emergency on-call service, which accepts a full range of general surgical emergencies and has the support of 24 hour interventional radiology.

The hospital is a major teaching hospital with an active teaching programme for medical students to which the post holder will be expected to contribute.

The appointee will be expected to contribute to the Division's audit process and enter patients for ongoing clinical trials.
