Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for Band 5 Biomedical Scientists within the Haematology department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, forward thinking individual, to help deliver a high quality, first class service to our users.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital (BHH), Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and Solihull Hospital. There are a number of vacancies across the sites and could potentially have a base as BHH or QEHB.

The laboratories receive over half a million Haematology requests annually, providing a twenty-four hour diagnostic and monitoring services. The laboratory situated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the nominated Coagulation laboratory for the West Midlands Regional Haemophilia comprehensive care service and a designated Transfusion Trauma Centre. The laboratories are ISO 15189 and IBMS accredited and MHRA approved. The laboratories are also an established military training facility.

Currently the laboratory operates a 24/7 shift system and after appropriate training you will be expected to participate in the departmental shift system which attracts AfC enhanced payments.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for performing the technical tasks to meet the needs of the laboratory service. This includes analysis, technical validation, interpretive decisions and reporting of samples to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care and resource management.

You will be expected to work collaboratively within the laboratory team in haematology, coagulation and blood transfusion. You will be committed to providing a high standard of service to our patients and partake in the quality programme of the laboratory. You should have an understanding of legislation, regulation and the maintenance of compliance with ISO 15189.

You will require an IBMS accredited BSc Biomedical Science or equivalent, HCPC registration and evidence of on going CPD.The ideal candidate must be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with experience in working in a clinical laboratory. Applicants will rotate through Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion and therefore Haematology experience is essential. Further study, scientific posters and papers, and CPD are strongly encouraged and supported.
