Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone considering a healthcare science career in Clinical and Scientific Computing (CSC). We are looking for an enthusiastic graduate to assist the Clinical Computing and Imaging Sciences Service (CCISS) at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). The ideal candidate will have a degree in a subject with significant computing content, eg computer science, engineering or a physical science. The post is a 12-month fixed term contract covering a Band 6 Clinical Technologist secondment. Registration with the Register of Clinical Technologists (or equivalent) is required for full banding, but the position could be offered at band 5 to an unregistered technologist or as a Junior Healthcare Scientist development opportunity for example to support an application to the Scientist Training Programme (STP) scheme.
CCISS is part of the UHB Medical Physics department providing CSC support to the other specialities. It has a strong focus on radiotherapy, but also supports the Radiation Protection Service and the research activities of the Imaging service. The CCISS team comprises of ten scientists and technologists mostly based in the radiotherapy building on the QEHB site. The UHB radiotherapy service is large, specialist and delivers nationally leading levels of technical radiotherapy (IG-IMRT, SABR etc) on a complex infrastructure of equipment from Elekta, Accuray, Medcom and RaySearch.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of CCIS service provision, at a level appropriate to the needs of the service and the experience of the post holder. Activities you might be involved in include computer system installation, integration and management, data extraction and processing, scripting (eg Python) and in-house software development (eg Java EE).
You will work with commercial and in-house developed applications in the clinical environment, including systems certified as medical devices. You will work with a range of healthcare standards, such as DICOM and HL7 for communication and DCB0129/0160 for deployment.
You will provide user support, assist with troubleshooting where problems arise and help to deliver computing and imaging advances that underpin the clinical specialties supported by medical physics at UHB.
The post is full-time (37.5 hours per week) based primarily at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site, though some work at other UHB Trust sites may be required at times. Some flexibility in hours may be possible subject to service needs, for example we can support up to an average of 1 day per week working from home where appropriate.
