Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a large teaching hospital. There are automation laboratories across all four hospital sites (Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull and Queen Elizabeth hospitals), with the automation laboratories at QE and Heartlands sites being large, state of the art laboratories fitted with Abbott pre-analytics, Abbott Alinity platforms and tracks. The post holder will be required to primarily work in our automated laboratories on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Heartlands Hospital sites and will also be expected to contribute to the clinical support activities of the department in the cross-site duty biochemist rota, once state registered.

Main duties of the job

The post holder performs a range of highly specialist, advanced clinical and scientific duties with specific responsibility for automation and external quality assurance (EQA). This included the provision of highly specialist, expert advice to a wide range of other healthcare professional. The post holder is also responsible for training to own and other professions.

The post holder is responsible for the clinical interpretation and authorisation of clinical biochemistry diagnostic and monitoring results, liaising with clinical teams as necessary to advise on patient care pathways, result interpretation, repeat testing and additional investigations that may be required.

The post holder is required to contribute to the development and provision of a range of laboratory services including specialist investigations within the automation section of the department.

The post holder is required to contribute to the management of EQA for the Automation section.

The post holder is expected to support the department to maintain good performance in external quality assessment, compliance with laboratory accreditation standards and Trust clinical governance.

Essential

  • *1st class or 2:1 honors degree in biochemistry, chemistry or a closely related science
  • *State registration with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • *Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HCPC guidelines
  • *FRC Path Part 1

Desirable

  • *MSc in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent
  • *PhD in a relevant area of science

Experience

  • *Substantial experience as a clinical scientist in a large laboratory covering an extensive range of tests
  • *Previous experience in audit, research and development, method/equipment appraisal and evaluation, management of a specialist or routine service
  • *Evidence of continuous professional development and discipline specific proficiency for maintenance of HCPC registration
  • *An advanced, specialist knowledge of clinical biochemistry and laboratory medicine
  • *An advanced knowledge of automation techniques
  • *Awareness of the political and cultural aspects of the NHS
  • *Awareness of clinical governance and risk management
  • *Awareness of laboratory health and safety
