We are seeking enthusiastic pharmacists to join the established critical care, surgery and nutrition teams supporting provision of clinical and operational pharmacy services to acutely unwell patients. This is a new opportunity for extended rotations in general surgery, surgical admissions, GI surgery, nutrition support team, critical care and Burns with development of additional skills in preparation for progression to senior pharmacist roles.

As part of a large clinical pharmacy team, you will work closely with the specialist pharmacists for Intensive care medicine and gastroenterology & nutrition, consultants and ward managers. We can provide the opportunity to develop clinical pharmacy skills in supporting acutely unwell patients including complex trauma, liver, cardiac and burns patients alongside transplant patients. Participating in the nutrition support team you will attend ward rounds, be involved in pharmacist led home parenteral nutrition telephone clinics and provide education to patients and healthcare professionals on pharmaceutical issues.

A fully integrated electronic prescribing and patient monitoring system allows us to deliver enhanced pharmaceutical care to a wide breadth of specialities.

Main duties of the job

To partake in specialised clinical pharmacy duties on the critical care units, burns and surgical wards at QEHB, ensuring core clinical pharmacy activities are undertaken. Cross site critical care cover may be required with prior notice.

Develop effective working relationships, to challenge and to prioritise your own work as well of the work of the team.

Assist in providing a specialist pharmaceutical service to tertiary services including the provision of education and training, procedures, protocols and medicines usage information.

Ensure that through the provision of pharmacy services and advice to patients, carers and other healthcare professionals , there is safe and effective use of medicines.

Provide leadership and directorate/service support roles to the burns speciality and specialist support to the nutritional support team/surgical specialities on a rotational basis.

Support more junior staff in the department

Take full part in clinical/dispensary rota, weekend rota and bank holiday duties

Take part in the support of pharmacy out-of-hours service (first oncall duties)

Previous experience in critical care and/or TPN is desirable but not essential as you will be supported in completing in house training programmes. UHB prides itself on its investment in staff both in terms of developing career skills but also its commitment to staff health and wellbeing.
