Job summary
Optometrist Specialist -- Agenda for Change Band 7
Applications are invited for a Specialist Optometrist at University Hospitals Birmingham. Applicants must have specialist knowledge and skills in core optometry duties which must include medical contact lens practice. Clinics may be scheduled at Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Solihull and Good Hope Hospitals. You will be joining a team of highly experienced optometrists, ophthalmologists, orthoptists, ophthalmic science practitioners, nurses and administrative staff.

Main duties of the job
Exercise independent, specialist, clinical judgement to interpret and evaluate highly complex, highly sensitive, multiple and multi-variant optometric and visual function test results utilizing experience, contemporary research and evidence based practice.
Diagnose, treat, prescribe and advise patients in a broad range of unique and complex cases where previous clinical precedents or expert protocols differ or may not exist.
Exercise independent clinical judgement to prioritise, refer and discharge patients referred to the Optometry and Ophthalmic Science Department.
Examine patients referred from specialist ophthalmology clinics, other specialist departments, general practitioners and other external sources.
Select appropriate diagnostic investigations based on professional expertise.
Adapt examinations to match clinical observations and the age, mental and physical ability of patients.
Provide highly specialised advice to optometry and ophthalmic professionals concerning the care of adult and paediatric patients.
Liaise with consultant ophthalmologists to plan the optical and therapeutic treatment.
