Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated orthoptist to join our dynamic Orthoptic team at University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

The post is based primarily at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital where the eye department will be soon relocated to a new purposed built centre with other allied health professionals; with cover at Solihull Hospital and Good hope Hospital. We provide a full range of sub-speciality clinics including botulinum toxin, motility, paediatric, neurology, stroke and oculoplastic. The successful candidate will be working alongside a multidisciplinary team which includes Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Optometrists, Technicians, administrative staff and health care assistants.

We provide an Orthoptic led service with two paediatric strabismic consultants.

This is a full-time role with a 12 month contract to cover maternity leave. We are open to considering candidates who may prefer to work part-time, compressed hours and newly qualified orthoptists (Band5/6 depending on previous experience).

The successful candidate will provide Orthoptic, primary school screening and allied services. The clinician will have clinical experience, be able to practice independently but support and advice for the more complex clinical diagnosis will be available.

There are also opportunities to extend your role including ophthalmology advanced clinical practice (paediatrics), intravitreal injection, stroke, glaucoma and low vision therapy.

Main duties of the job

As an autonomous practitioner you will plan, implement and monitor individual orthoptic treatment plans/care pathways for patients of all ages using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice. You will expect to participate in the multidisplinary assessment of patient of all ages attending specialist clinic including Botulinum Toxin injection, Stroke, Motlity, Oculoplastic and Thyroid clinic.

Previous community and school visual screening experience will be an advantage.

You will take part in delivering specialist training and education to orthoptic undergraduate students, pre-reg optometrists, health care assistants and nurses.

You should have excellent time management skills, good communication skills and exceptional organisational skills.
