Job summary
We have exciting opportunities for Medical Laboratory Assistants within Clinical Microbiology at QEHB to provide support to our HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientists. The Trust is one of the largest acute Trusts in England, it is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital.
The post holder is responsible for processing patient specimens for biomedical testing and maintaining all records involved in the diagnostic pathway. This includes: receiving, sorting, labelling and preparing specimens; resolving issues such as mislabelled or missing samples, performing reception duties, data entry, dealing with telephone enquiries and relaying test results to clinicians and other healthcare workers, performing general housekeeping duties. Being able to work well under pressure and alongside members of the multi-disciplinary team is essential.
The post holder will be guided by Standard Operating Procedures but also propose improved ways of working. The post holder will deal with routine enquiries and know when to seek advice or when to refer non-routine matters to a supervisor.
Training will be provided on all internal systems. We are UKAS accredited to ISO 151899 standards MHRA approved, IBMS accredited for training and we support Continuous Professional Development.
Main duties of the job
In providing a 24/7 service, there is requirement for working at weekends and bank holidays. Participation in overnight and late shifts would be necessary.
Main Duties
*To safely handle, use and dispose of biological samples.
*To receive, check conditions and record details of incoming goods
*To collect, receive, sort, check patient and request details, label and process and where appropriate despatch patient samples in line with Departmental procedure.
*To report to the relevant supervisor or manager any errors or incidents in line with Departmental procedure
*Perform a range of laboratory tests following standard operating procedures that require speed, accuracy and good hand eye co-ordination.
*Perform daily housekeeping duties
*Perform a range of administrative duties, including data entry, filing and scanning.
*Perform monitoring and recording of equipment for example temperature monitoring
*An understanding of automated instruments and equipment. Maintenance and problem solving will be crucial.
A two stage interview process will occur, if successfully shortlisted a timed online test will be e-mailed for completion by a specific date. Interviews will take place face to face at Queen Elizabeth hospital site for those successful with the test. If you are unable to complete the test discussion with the laboratory before the deadline will be required to potentially organise completion on-site.
