Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) provide local, regional and supra-regional cardiology service with all major sub-specialities on one site at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, opened in 2010. Services include adult congenital heart disease (ACHD), interventional cardiology, heart failure, imaging, electrophysiology and congenital and acquired cardiac surgery including LVAD implantation and heart and lung transplantation. There are close links between the NHS cardiology department and the University of Birmingham School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine. Facilities include 4 catheter laboratories and the full range of non-invasive investigations including cardiac MR, nuclear cardiology, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing and an echo suite. The hospital is one of the largest in the UK and provides all major medical and surgical specialties to the local population in addition to many regional and supra-regional services. It also houses the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine. A new Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM) opened in 2015.
This post is for a Locum Consultant Cardiologist based at Heartlands Hospital, part of UHB. The successful applicant will be experienced in adult general cardiology, will share the management of cardiology patients admitted to BHH Cardiology wards, the Chest Pain Assessment Unit and will provide care for his/her own patients admitted to the Trust.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service. The appointee will
*Join the Cardiology Consultant team to deliver a first class cardiology service and contribute to the development of the service
*Support the directorate in meeting key performance indicators*
*Deliver agreed standards of care and work, with MDTs, to improve standards where appropriate*
*Provide continuing patient care in partnership with consultant colleagues across the 3 sites

*Allow greater flexibility through effective cover of sickness and annual leave
*Provide professional supervision, direction and training for junior medical staff
*Take an active role in audit, research, teaching and governance
*Participate in local day time on call and review of cardiology admissions
*On a rotational basis provide ward cover for Wards 6 and 9 at BHH
*Participate in plans to lead to cost efficiencies across the Directorate*
*The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
*Comply with mandatory training requirements of the Trust**
*The Trust has the required arrangements in place, as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians, to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports doctors going through the revalidation process.
* Participation in service improvements and cost efficiencies will be incorporated in monthly directorate meetings.
** The post holder will be expected to cancel clinical commitments to participate in mandatory training as and when necessary.
A mentor will be allocated to the post holder from within the existing team of experienced consultant cardiologists on commencement of employment within the Trust. We believe mentorship is a valuable tool to support new consultants providing personal and professional development for healthcare professionals.
The post holder has dedicated secretarial support, the secretary works as part of a team of 6 secretaries supporting the Cardiology Consultant team. The post holder will have a dedicated office with IT equipment at Heartlands Hospital.
Subject to the provisions of the terms and conditions of service the post holder must observe agreed policies on clinical matters and should follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Hospital. This is to support the development of evidence-based medicine and is not intended to constrain individual consultant freedom.
In the management of employees of the Trust, the post holder will be expected to follow legislation and personnel policies and procedures and in particular to act in accordance with the legislation laid down in this respect.
This job is a 10 PA post. PAs for the out of hours on call will be negotiated at interview.
